What is the scope of Functional Nutrition?

Functional Nutrition takes a holistic approach to health by incorporating food, sleep, stress, fitness, and toxic environmental factors, in an effort to reduce the risk of chronic disease


Most of us view food with the narrow lens of it being a means to sustenance. While that is true, the real role of food is one of information and that too at a cellular level.

The food that we eat informs our cells of the external environment and our cells then take in this information to produce energy and perform other vital functions. And so our health is a true reflection of the kind and quality of the food that we eat.

Stress Management

In Functional Nutrition, the term diet is not limited to the food that we eat, it comprises of everything that we consume - the air we breathe, the water we drink, our digital and media consumption is higher than ever before and these avenues also collectively inform our cells of the external environment - toxins, pollutants, our moods and emotions, our happiness, our frustrations and so on. And our stress level is an amalgamation of our consumption and our ability to process it.


On the one hand, we’re consuming at an alarming rate and on the other hand, we’re leading a sedentary lifestyle. This is the perfect recipe for disaster. Science shows that the human body is not designed to be static for long periods.

Movement and exercise, therefore, form yet another cornerstone of Functional Nutrition. Movement not only counteracts the ill-effects from static postures,it also wakes up the body and mind by increasing blood flow and boosting metabolism, which helps us to be more productive throughout the day.

Rest and Sleep

As much as movement is important for our well-being, rest is just as important. Rest turns on our parasympathetic nervous system which relaxes our body after periods of stress or danger. It also helps run life-sustaining processes, like digestion, during times when you feel safe and relaxed.

And sleep is a big part of rest. Sleep is essential to achieve the best state of physical and mental health. Research suggests that sleep plays an important role in learning, memory, mood, and judgment.

Toxic Environmental factors

Our endocrine system includes different glands — like the thyroid or pituitary gland — that produce hormones. These hormones help regulate body functions.

Toxins are artificial chemicals that interfere with the proper functioning of our hormones. And environmental toxins are everywhere - the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe, cleaning products, cosmetics, plasticware, and other household items. The impact of these toxins is something worth considering for sure.
